Getting Stronger With Nemesis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Nemesis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

I’m a giant wussy and I’m guessing you might be too. I don’t mean to insult you, so let me explain. I started taking Brazilian jiu-jitsu close to a month ago at a gym called Nemesis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, because all I do is sit on my butt for my job. I knew I needed to be more active and my doctor, (I can’t believe I have a doctor!), confirmed that. I got some information for a membership at L.A. Fitness, but the sales people there were so fake that I couldn’t commit myself to a place like that. Back in college, I took taekwondo; it kept me active and free of illness all winter, so I thought that it’d be good idea to get in shape with a martial art. One class at Nemesis is all it took for me to fully confirm that I’m a wussy. I persisted, though, and I’m really glad of where I’m at in my strength & skill building.

Everyone is super friendly at Nemesis. Even though I was at a beginner’s class, there were people much more experienced warming up with me. I think it was a small mistake on my part to try to keep up with them because I was limping on my left leg for the next five days due to a sore muscle. After it had repaired itself, I went back for my second class and have been able to persevere a little more each time. My muscles ache in places I forgot that I had muscles. Doing alligator crawls and shrimping are interesting moves that the human body isn’t used to doing on a daily basis. But it makes you a stronger person both physically and mentally.

And the aches go away. The bruises fade. I’m really excited to have a higher stamina and I’m actually looking forward to my next check-up to see if my cholesterol has gone down. Thinking about cholesterol makes me feel old and feeling old is the last thing I want to feel physically. Although it may cost more for a membership, a martial art may be just the thing for the person who doesn’t have the discipline to continue going to a gym. My new year’s resolution was to do more crunches and push-ups, but I think I’ve replaced it with jiu-jitsu and I doubt anyone would call me a quitter.

Think About Your Special Song

Do you and your partner have a special song? This was a question I placed for one of my clients today and it made me start thinking of a song for Yaicha and I. At the same time, I stumbled upon a greatest hits album called “Eggs Are Funny” on Spotify for a prog-rock band called Mew.

Mew was one of the first ways that we met, when she came in to my work at the CD/Game Exchange to special order a couple Mew CDs. Years later, I’d take her to see Mew for the second time at the Hawthorne Theater and I’d be blown away with their live performance.

So, while I don’t believe we have a song, I think this is probably our band. I leave you with “The Zookeeper’s Boy” off their 2006 album “And The Glass Handed Kites.” Give it a listen and I’d love to hear what your song or band is.
